Finding the perfect coffee travel mug has been preoccupying me for some time. I have in the past purchased numerous types of mugs, model numbers, makes, varieties and so on, but none of these impressed me. They either did not contain the liquid well, leaked, the size was not right, they were plastic inside, it was awkward to drink from the cup and the like. I would also always find some obscure reason why they did not fit me perfectly. I had pretty much given up on finding the consummate drinking vessel ... and then ... At a friendly get together with friends in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles, I was introduced to the Contigo coffee mug. Life would never be the same.

One of our friends, sitting right next to us, sipped on coffee from an interesting mug as we had pizza and conversed about the most diverse set of topics. One topic ended up being coffee travel mugs and she was happy to point out her Contigo cup. Apparently, it was spill proof. I immediately took interest. A few weeks later, I bought my own at Target for around twenty dollars. The official name of the cup is AUTOSEAL® Stainless Steel Mug (Vacuum Insulated). A simple outside stainless steel design does not reveal the promised magic. The lid has an autoseal feature. You must press a button on the lid in order for the drink to be released from the mug. It (the button) is conveniently (and I think ergonomically) placed so that when you want to take a sip, it is effortless to depress it with your fingers. The top of the lid is quite smooth and comfortable for placing your lips on it when drinking. The lid fits well on the stainless steel body and it truly is spill proof (so far anyway). I have had the mug for approximately six months and it has never given me any problems. Every time you grab the cup to drink you open the valve and enjoy your beverage. As soon as you put it down the button is released and the valve closed disabling the liquid from escaping. This mechanism works really well. The hot drinks stay hot for hours. Very good insulation. The only issue I had was that after you fill up the container with a hot liquid, the first time you press the drinking button, it releases pressure through a small valve on top. This creates a pop and a hiss and is sometimes a bit surprising. You cannot get scolded (I think) because the valve is protected, but the pop sometimes stuns me. In the instructions for use, it is also noted that you cannot wash it in the dishwasher. Huh? Upon more detailed examination of the users guide, I learned that they do not recommend washing the stainless steel body in the dishwasher, but that the plastic lid is OK in the top rack? I have washed both parts in the dishwasher since my purchase and I have not noticed any issues with either. The entire product is well made and after continuous six month use, dropping and dish-washing it is still in great condition.

Bronze IDEA Award for Stainless Steel AUTOSEAL®Mug (July 2007). Cool. I am enjoying my coffee drinks from this Contigo mug and will continue to do so. It is BPA free too which is great. Several color options area available: Blue, Silver, Rose, Maroon. I have already talked about it so much that several friends and family members have purchased their own. I have not yet taken it on any longer travels but it has accompanied me on several three to four hour car trips. Remember that if you bring your own mug to all of the popular coffee places they will give you a ten cent discount. Just order a small coffee and they will fill up your mug to the rim (in 95% of the cases). Cool again. A very recommended product. Check it out.

Ziploc® bags must be one of the most useful packing accessories around. Ever since we first placed a few toiletries inside one of these bags and discovered their practicality, they have become indispensable for us. Keeping the toothpaste from smearing on your shoes, storing coins all in one place, protecting your travel documents, ensuring that the shampoo does not soak your undergarments and assuring that the ball point pen does not leak onto your favorite shirt are just a few benefits. The small size makes it easy to carry empty bags around. Their reliability and trustworthiness are well known. Some could say that you might as well then pack everything you have inside one of these bags. I wish we could. The truth is that when packing time comes around we regularly have only a limited supply and must make priorities. Below is a list of items we have put inside Ziploc at one point or another when travelling. Enjoy!

Toiletries
Ziplocs can prevent leaking and smearing of shampoo, toothpaste, deodorants, sunscreen, perfumes and any other liquids (and similar) you might take along. This is always our top priority. We do take along classic toiletry bags but we place the Ziplocs inside of these. For some reason, sunscreen tubes had caused more mishaps for us than any other item and we make sure to bag these well. We always put our toothbrushes in Ziplocs to keep them clean as much as possible. I do not even like to think of my toothbrush getting in contact with other stuff. Another item that gets bagged is floss. Cosmetics are also always on the list for their own bag.

Clothing
We have not really used Ziplocs for clothing. The couple of exceptions are when a certain garment would get so dirty that it would soil (or stink) up all other clothing items in the travel bag. Then, it's time to isolate the culprit.

Food
This part is almost superficial. On numerous occasions we packed our sandwiches, fruit, snacks, crackers and everything else into these bags to preserve freshness and keep the bugs out.

Travel Documents
We try to do this as often as possible. In order to keep our travel documents clean and protected we often to place them in a Ziploc bag. I am mostly referring to our passports. On international trips we have to carry them around at all times. Often, this is in a travel wallet which can get damp and ruin your passport. The plastic bags preserve them as much as possible. On occasion we will also place electronic ticket printouts, maps and printed directions in them. We do prefer the transparent string envelopes for these larger mentioned documents and papers.

For Babies
Where do we start here? We have packed diapers, wet wipes and clean cloths for the babies (separately, of course). Also, we have placed bottles inside them to try to keep the germs out. We have also placed formula to go in the Ziplocs. And then there is the classic, putting cereal in Ziplocs. In the end, let's not forget the dirty diapers, burp cloths and soiled clothes.

Electronics
We have used Ziplocs to protect our digital camera on boats and in rainy weather and it served its purpose really well. Once, also on a boat, I placed my phone in one of these bags. iPod is a good candidate too. We keep batteries for the road in Ziplocs.

Miscellaneous
Playing cards are a good item to pack in them. Pens are most recommended for Ziploc placement, especially the ones that will possibly leak ink. Extra coins and change will get lost if you ignore them. You know what to do, place them in the bag. If you need to ice an injury quickly, get out some ice and pack it in the Ziploc. Hair clips and other beauty products have made their way into these bags in our case as well.

I am sure I missed a few ....

So, are we some Ziploc fanatics? Nope. We just like practical and useful products. Our favorite size and model is the the most standard one quarter (volume) double zipper kind. We do get them in bulk at Costco, if that makes any difference. Hopefully the notes above will give the readers some good ideas on how to prevent unnecessary mishaps while traveling and organize your travel necessities better. Our purchase of a Heys 4WD two piece luggage set was purely an impulse buy. As with many other occasions we were shopping for (mostly) food items at Costco and in the isle that showcases luggage, ran into this set. It looked really nice and consisted of 30" and 27" uprights. We had wanted to buy some luggage with four rolling wheels for some time (spinners they call them) and this seemed like a perfect opportunity. One problem was that we knew nothing of this company. The two sample pieces were super light and appeared sturdy. The wheels functioned perfectly and smoothly on the warehouse floor. We decided to chance it and bought the pair for just above one hundred US dollars. On our various trips we had seen many people pushing their luggage on four wheels effortlessly (in Japan they were everywhere) and finally this wish of ours came true.

It has been around eighteen months since then. In that period of time we took around twenty different trips, probably half by airplane and the other half within driving distance from Los Angeles. Our overall impression with this luggage is most positive. They have held up to a lot of abuse so far. The company calls them the "The World's Lightest Spinner Luggage", but I always take such marketing phrases with a grain of salt. They are very lightweight though in reality. The silver outside finish makes them look sleek too. The material is Polycarbonate composite which is supposed to be very tough and withstand a lot of stress and pressure. Ours look like they are new after a year and a half. The luggage is expandable via zippers. If you need more space just slide the outside zippers and it will expand the width of the suitcase. The expanded part is made of soft cloth like material. We have used the expanded mode on several trips. The interior is nicely lined and basic. It has a divider and straps to keep your stuff from falling out. Works well. The wheels are my favorite feature. They glide super smooth. You can push fifty pounds with ease at any airport. On one occasion, I even pushed a stuffed 30" suitcase down ten or so blocks in New York city without any issues. The four wheels rock! I often also rest another piece of luggage on top of it and push all together. Sweet!

Important note : On the 30" piece, a small plastic part did break off after our first trip. It is the small plastic part for the suitcase to rest of when on its side. We had to send in the luggage to Florida and pay one way shipping. Cheapest was around $25. The repair center also said we could order the part for under fifteen dollars and fix it ourselves. We did not want to do that since it involved cutting the inside liner. The pros did it really well in our case. The warranty is five years and they did uphold it without problems.

Marketers at Costco sometimes bring you a deal that you cannot refuse. Such was the case many years ago (around five) when I came upon the Swiss Gear Rolling Briefcase in one of their isles. I was on the lookout for a carry-on travel bag which is also a briefcase and also a laptop bag for some time. The under one hundred dollar price point was definitely right. The bag appeared most versatile with multiple compartments. It had a separate laptop bag. I liked the black color. An impulse decision was made to purchase this bag. I have not regretted it ever. It is a most useful piece of luggage.

The bag has four main compartments which all close with sturdy zippers. It is light in weight. The front two are mainly for office supplies, magazines, books, documents, pens and other trinkets. Multiple pockets, mesh zipper areas, holders and such make sorting your valuables easy. I love the little key hook. I use it all the time. Document separators are useful so that your documents will not get crumpled up. Two small zipped compartments on the outside and on the top are great for the cellphone and travel documents as they are immediately accessible. The two deeper compartments can fit a change of clothes and a few basic necessities for an overnight stay (maybe even two). The compartments expand surprisingly wide. When you completely fill the bag it can get quite heavy. It fits a lot of stuff.

The laptop bag is a separate piece that comes with this set. It can accommodate the standard size laptops with accessories. It can fit nicely into one of the two deeper pockets. If you do put the laptop in the bag, it does take substantial space and limits capacity for other items.

When going through security at airports, removing the laptop from this setup is a breeze. If it is completely full it will not fit under the airplane seat in front of you. It can always fit in the overhead compartment sideways or straight in. On smaller commuter airplanes you will have to check the bag in right at the airplane door. The rollers are excellent and after miles and miles of use at airports, parking lots, bumpy streets and more they still roll smoothly and quietly. The handles are in perfect condition. The extendable handle works perfectly. When extended you can rest another small carry-on bag or other item for lugging through the airport. It is also good for resting your coat on it.

After five years of use and abuse it still looks great. It has not worn much at all. All the pieces are functioning very well. Zippers are still like new. Having said that, I believe that I can use my Swiss Gear Rolling Computer Case for many years to come. I like to completely wear out the products I buy, and it seems like I will be using this case for years to come. The new models are slightly different than the one I have but still have the overall look and feel of the model that I described. A most recommended travel product. I really really like it.

What is this, you may ask yourself now, a string envelope as a travel tool?!? Yes, of course. I find that many things around the house can help you be an efficient traveler and aid you with some of life's traveling challenges. The string envelopes serve as an excellent travel document holder. Get the transparent ones. They are the most useful. The cost should not be more than a dollar or so per envelope and they are reusable. With all this initial useful information you must be intrigued .. Read on ...

Everyone these days prints out their travel itinerary, maps, schedules and lately the boarding passes as well. We often see people at the airport looking through their crumpled papers figuring out which document they need, sometimes the ink wears off. More often than not we also store documents in multiple locations in our luggage as if we want to play a game with ourselves of ?finding the right printout?. So what is one supposed to do with this issue without breaking their bank ...

Recently, while on a visit to an office supply store I bought some see-through string envelopes for organizing various documents around the house. They became one of my favorite organization tools due to their transparency (you can see what is actually stored in them), their cost and reusability. Not long after that, my wife had even a better idea of storing all of our travel printouts when we are on the road. Awesome idea! Ever since, we place our printouts dealing with tickets, schedules, rentals, accommodations, recommendations and the like in our little string envelope. The papers do not get messed up and they are in one place. The envelopes also do not take much space, they are just a bit larger than the papers themselves and not much heavier either. If you place the most important one (like the schedules, flight codes, maps) on the outside you do not even have to take the paper out, you can see through the envelope.

If you have had a similar challenge while traveling, try it out. It won't set you back too much money and you just might discover a really cool organization tool. You can get them at any office supply store (an example is above) ... Perhaps you can borrow one from a friend just to see how you like it :) ... We use it all the time and recommend it wholeheartedly.

Not satisfied with just any chair that I would use for outdoor activities I engaged in a search for the best. This was no easy task since camping, sports and other outdoors chairs abound. Prices vary drastically. All I needed is a stroke of luck. At a sports tournament I noticed a member from the opposing team use a chair that I thought might make the cut. He was very courteous and allowed me to test it out. It was perfect. Comfortable, very light, side table, side pockets for knick-knacks, carrying strap and extremely sturdy. I bought the chair not much later. In the past year it has proven itself very valuable. It is not cheap but it is excellent. Wherever I place it people approach and ask about it, but that's not why I bought it. The chair is mostly for use within a short walking distance from your car. It cannot be carried for hiking treks. This is a life saver when you are on the road and need to store small amounts of liquid. I have tried a bunch of different solutions to safely transport shampoo, rubbing alcohol, liquid soap, mouthwash and what not and these bottles have proven quite tough little numbers. I like to take along all my toiletry necessities. Hotel shampoos, mouthwashes and the like just do not add up to the stuff I am used to. Also, when I am in a foreign country the last thing I want to do is experiment with their cosmetics and chemicals. Nalgene makes all sorts of liquid storage containers for the medical field as well so I assume they know what they are doing. Here is a blurb from their web site ...

Recently we took a looong trip around the world. If there is any item I would recommend for bringing along it would be a travel pillow. We bought ours at a local sports store without learning about travel pillows prior to this ... Luckily, the choice proved itself as awesome ...

The Slumberjack pillow was the right size, softness and thickness for us. Usually when you arrive at a hotel you are greeted with monstrous pillows. In nine cases out of ten, the pillows do not conform to your sleeping style. I have spent too many a sleepless night in hotels where the pillows were not up to par. Learning from previous mistakes, we brought these along. It was the perfect solution. They were not expensive at all and came with a carrying ouch. Here is what they looked like.
