Small town of Ojai and the surrounding Ojai Valley near Santa Barbara are worthwhile tourist destinations without a doubt. This fact is known well to people living in Southern California. Many come to spend just a restful day here and many more come for extended vacations. It is also growing in popularity as a retirement area. Busiest tourist activities in Ojai are centered in downtown along East Ojai Avenue, bordered roughly by Montgomery and Ventura streets. While visiting Ojai we traced this area up and down many times stopping to check out the galleries, grabbing a bit to eat and get some exercise. My theory is a real traveler is able to discover interesting things even in the most unlikely of places. Well, Buffalo probably hasn't made the "top travel destinations" list for a while, but I have been doing some research on it and I thought it's high time to explore Buffalo, the closest American city to Toronto, just south of Niagara Falls and right across the Fort Erie border.

So my fellow travel and architecture aficionado Shauna and I headed out early yesterday morning to make the 2 hour trek to Buffalo. We picked the Fort Erie border crossing and fortunately it wasn't very busy at all. The border crossing was actually a reasonably pleasant experience as the border guards were in a really good mood and very friendly, a nice foreboding to a good day.

Approaching the city we immediately took a wrong turn and headed south on Highway 5 away from downtown. But we got to see Buffalo's waterfront, which in this area includes a few rather unspectacular marinas and some old run-down industrial buildings. We turned ourselves around and headed back towards the downtown area. Because the tourist information office was closed on Sunday we figured, we'd stop in at the Hampton Inn & Suites Hotel to pick up some tourist brochures and city maps. Another pleasant experience: The lady at the front counter was extremely helpful, provided us with several brochures and a printout of how to get to 2 of the most important architectural heritage sites in Buffalo: Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House and his other important Buffalo work, Graycliff Mansion.

Preston is often referred to as the 'green city’ as over 2/3 of city is given over to open spaces and countryside, criss-crossed by over 160 miles of public footpaths and Bridleways which includes the famous 'round Preston walk, and parts of the Ribble Way and Lancashire Cycle Way. Waterside strolls can be had beside the Lancaster Canal, perhaps taking the sculpture alongside the Millennium Ribble Link which follows the route of Savick Brook, connecting the Lancaster Canal at Preston to the River Ribble. The link has been designed as a linear water park and includes a sculpture trail with provisions for cycle and footpaths alongside the water route. Alternatively Preston Docklands and Marina provides shopping, cinema, pubs and restaurants to reward you leisure waterside stroll.

Ipswich is the best of the old and the new. From being the oldest English town, it is now a thriving regional centre and a virtual city. The glory of Wolsey and Dickens has given way to hi-tech pioneers and a Waterfront renaissance.

A Brief History of Ipswich

The Anglo-Saxons settled here around 600 AD and, although subject to Viking invasion for around 300 years, Ipswich thrived as a port and was awarded a Royal Charter by King John in 1200. It has played its part in voyages of discovery and the formation of new nations. Thomas Eldred sailed with Thomas Cavendish in the Desire which circumnavigated the globe in 1586-88 and Bartholomew Gosnold, from nearby Otley, discovered Cape Cod in 1602 and named Martha's Vineyard after his daughter. In 1607 he took settlers aboard the Godspeed to the founding of Jamestown in Virginia, the first permanent English-speaking colony in the New World.

Several friends of ours are regular visitors to Wharo and they took us along on one of their excursions. We have been to Korean Barbecue restaurants many times and are always on the lookout for a cool new spot. We made reservations for a Friday early evening dinner around six o'clock. On Lincoln Blvd, just South of the intersection with Washington Blvd we noted the Wharo sign. Parking is available in front of the restaurant. It is shared with several other business so it gets filled up quickly. I arrived first and chose to sit at the designated table and enjoy a drink while the others arrive.

Try searching the Americas to find creators of folk art with more form, symbolism and importance to the development and sustenance of their culture, than those of indigenous ancestry in Oaxaca (wa-HAW-ka), one of the southernmost Mexican states.

Many so-called experts in folk art have mistakenly written that the origins of Oaxaca's wood carving tradition date back fifty or sixty years, to a small number of carvers residing in one of the central valleys of Oaxaca, a few miles from the state capital of the same name. The error has consistently been equating the recent commercialization of the art-form with its origins, and ignoring its pre-Hispanic roots and subsequent development.

Jacobo Ángeles lives with his wife María and two children in San Martín Tilcajete, one of three main native Zapotec villages, where most residents earn a living from carving and painting colorful figures, often generically referred to as alebrijes. The others are Arrazola and La Unión Tejalapan.

We had a busy schedule of activities on this day and needed to eat lunch quickly and find the right restaurant "right now". Our goal is always to try a new place. Just West of the intersections of Hawthorne Boulevard and 182nd Street we noticed La Cocina. It appeared to be a small local Mexican Restaurant. It had ample parking and an A rating from the LA County so we decided to give it a shot. It was just past two o'clock in the afternoon on a Thursday and there were not too many patrons inside. We were greeted at the entrance by the hostess and offered choice of seating.

Visiting Warwick is a friendly and a memorable experience with something for all ages. Orkney has fascinating discoveries around every corner, many of which ultimately pose more questions than they answer. Visitors don't need a particular knowledge of history - just curiosity, a lively imagination, and a bit of vision!

Orkney boasts some of the best-preserved archaeological sites in Europe, including Neolithic villages, burial tombs and impressive stone circles. Orkneys 5,500 year-old Neolithic Heartland was granted World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1999. This includes the magnificent Ring of Brodgar - originally 60 stones in a vast circle between the Stenness and Harray Lochs, 27 of which remain standing. Close by are the Standing Stones of Stenness, Barnhouse Village and the tomb of Maeshowe, which is considered to be one of the finest architectural achievements of prehistoric Europe, and is Orkney's largest and finest chambered cairn. The Vikings visited Maeshowe during the 12th century and left one of the largest collections of Norse runic inscriptions known.
