Hors d`oeuvre
Bite size foods or appetizers served before the main meal
Petit Four
Small bite size desserts, offered at more upscale restaurants at the end of the meal at no charge. If the guest does not order dessert, the Petit Four provides a nice finish to the palette and also signals the restaurant`s appreciation for the guest`s visit.
Amuse Bouche
Small, bite size foods, served at more upscale restaurants before the appetizer (and at no cost). These miniature items are provided and selected by the chef to welcome the guests, introduce the restaurant cuisine and awaken the palate.
Bento Box
Serving dish common in Japanese cuisine. Usually a rectangular, boxy shape. Small subdivisions in the box contain different meal items (rice, fish, salad, etc.). Traditionally used as containers for take out or home made meals.
Baggage Fee
Cost associated with checking in luggage for a flight. Price is determined per bag and is also based on its weight. Incurred cost can start at fifteen dollars for one bag under fifty pounds to several hundred dollars for multiple bags over fifty pounds each. Only select airlines offer free baggage check in for US domestic flights. It is advisable to verify these fees in advance before heading to the airport.
Front Desk
Hotel employees, usually stationed in a central location in the hotel lobby, that provide customary services to the hotel guests like check in, check out, providing general information and more. Most larger hotels operate a 24 hour front desk.
Room Service
Courtesy provided by the hotel in which food, drinks or almost any item can be brought directly to a hotel guest`s room per request. Most often accompanied by a tip to the room service employee.
Hotel Lobby
Room(s) at the entrance of the hotel that offer hotel front desk services (check in, check out, special requests, questions about the property,...). A lobby also serves to welcome guests, impress them and provide a space for socializing. Often includes a sitting area, concierge, luggage storage, vending machines, bar or other similar amenities to make the visitor`s experience more favorable.
Standby
List of passengers who do not have a confirmed seating assignment for the flight but are waiting to learn if seats will become available in the minutes prior to the actual flight departure. Seats may become available due to cancellations, passengers not showing up for their reserved flight or just by being late from other legs of their trip. Most often, passengers on the standby list have tickets for other flights (later in the day, etc.) with the same airline. Priority on the standby list varies based on numerous circumstances : missed flights, class of travel, frequent flier status, number of passengers and others.
Class in Air Travel
Sections of the passenger cabin on the airplane differentiated based on price, passenger space, comfort, amenities, luxury, check in privileges and more. Most common air travel classes are (starting at highest price): First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy (also known as Coach).
